In a country where 75% of young Indians eagerly await the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their daily lives and productivity, the awareness and adoption of AI remain surprisingly low. According to a recent Google-Kantar study, there is a pressing need for government incentives and substantial investments in AI to strengthen cybersecurity and border security.
A report by Nexgen Exhibitions revealed that 86% of respondents agree or strongly agree that India requires proactive government support in AI for national security. The study also highlighted the importance of AI literacy, recognizing the global demand for AI-powered solutions.
In this context, the Maharashtra Government’s Skill Development Department-certified institute has emerged as a beacon of hope for tribal youth, offering professional courses in Software Development, Web Development, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. The institute has introduced AI literacy at the grassroots level, teaching students AI tool usage, automation, data structuring, and content generation.
India’s AI journey began with UNESCO’s adoption of the ‘Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence’ in [Year], which provided a roadmap for developing ethics guidelines for AI. In 2023, the Indian government published a proposal for the Digital India Act (DIA), informed by the governance principles outlined in NITI Aayog’s 2018 National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence. The DIA proposes a “principles and rules-based” approach, guided by openness, safety and trust, accountability, quality of service, and redress.
The report emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary approach to AI development, involving government, academia, and industry stakeholders. It also highlights the importance of developing AI-powered solutions for specific industries, such as healthcare, education, and finance, to address pressing national challenges.
In conclusion, India’s AI journey has just begun, and it is crucial to recognize the importance of AI literacy, government support, and industry collaboration to unlock the full potential of AI in the country. As AI continues to transform industries and daily life, it is essential to ensure that the benefits of AI adoption are equitably distributed and that the ethical implications of AI development are carefully considered.
