Rourkela Police Partners with NIT-R to Adopt Modern Technology for Smart Policing

Rourkela police has taken a significant step towards modernizing its operations by partnering with the National Institute of Technology-Rourkela (NIT-R). The two entities have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to leverage cutting-edge technologies for effective and efficient policing.

The partnership was formalized during the inauguration of an eight-day skill development program on digital transformation for police personnel. The program aims to train at least 200 police personnel in four batches on the fundamentals of data analytics, digital investigation tools, and technology-enabled policing practices.

Speaking at the event, DIG (Western Range) Brijesh Kumar Rai emphasized the growing role of technology in transforming the police services and the urgent need to upskill the force accordingly. He highlighted the importance of data-driven policing in enhancing transparency, efficiency, and citizen-centric service delivery.

NIT-R director Prof K Umamaheshwar Rao and registrar Prof Rohan Dhiman underscored the significance of synergy between academic innovation and police pragmatism in building scalable solutions for public welfare and citizen-friendly services. They emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to address the challenges faced by the police force in the digital age.

The MoU envisions a broader digital roadmap for Rourkela police, with future plans to embed artificial intelligence (AI) for predictive policing and intelligent data extraction. The project aims to enhance crime control, transparency, and efficiency, as well as improve citizen-centric service delivery.

Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani revealed that an encrypted database of habitual offenders is being prepared for AI search. He stressed the need for the police force to keep pace with the changing digital landscape, which is characterized by the expanding use of digital technology and growing cybercrime activities.

The partnership between Rourkela police and NIT-R is expected to yield numerous benefits, including the development of data-based policing strategies, enhanced transparency and accountability, and improved public trust. As the police force continues to adapt to the digital age, it is essential to prioritize the upskilling of personnel to ensure that they are equipped to handle the complex challenges of modern policing.

The success of this partnership serves as a model for other police forces to follow, demonstrating the potential for collaboration between academia and law enforcement to drive positive change and improve public safety.
